Certificates are the first thing institutional buyers check and the easiest thing to get wrong. This guide explains the certificates that matter for disposable hygiene products in the EU and U.S. — and how to verify them properly.
CE — European conformity
CE marking signals that a product meets applicable EU directives. For hygiene products, the applicable scope depends on whether the item is classified as a medical device (e.g., medical-grade incontinence products) or a general consumer product. Ask your supplier to state exactly which directive or regulation the CE marking refers to for your SKU — a blanket "CE" without a scope is not a useful answer.
FDA — United States
For the U.S., FDA registration applies to facilities and, for certain product classes, product listings. Confirm that the manufacturing site is FDA-registered and that your product category has the appropriate listing. Ask for the facility registration reference rather than accepting a logo alone.
ISO system certificates
- ISO 13485 — quality management for medical devices; the reference for medical-tier adult incontinence lines.
- ISO 9001 — general quality management; the baseline for any serious manufacturer.
- ISO 14001 — environmental management; increasingly expected by EU retail buyers.
- SMETA — social responsibility audit; commonly required by European retailers for supplier approval.
How to verify a certificate
- Request the certificate PDF, not a screenshot from a website.
- Check the issuing body, scope statement and validity period.
- Confirm the certificate covers the site and product you are buying, not just the corporate entity.
- For medical lines, ask which product grades fall under ISO 13485 versus standard quality management.
What to agree with your supplier
Put the required certificates and document deliverables into the contract: certificate copies with each shipment or on request, batch records for traceability, and a commitment to notify you if any certificate scope or status changes. Compliance is a relationship, not a one-time PDF.
