Sustainability claims are everywhere in hygiene products — and so is greenwashing. If you are sourcing an "eco" line, you need to know what the materials actually do and how to verify the claims before you print them on your packaging.
What bamboo fiber really is
Bamboo fiber in hygiene products is usually bamboo viscose — bamboo pulp processed into a soft, breathable non-woven or topsheet material. It is valued for softness and a renewable raw-material story. It is not automatically biodegradable: viscose is a manufactured fiber, and biodegradability depends on the full product construction, especially the film and SAP layers.
Biodegradable films and cores
- Biodegradable backsheets use bio-based or additive-modified films that break down faster under industrial composting conditions.
- The SAP problem — the super absorbent core is the hardest component to make biodegradable while keeping performance. Ask exactly how the core is addressed, not just the film.
- Composting conditions matter — "biodegradable" usually means industrial composting at specific temperature and humidity, not home compost. State the standard (e.g., EN 13432 family) your product claims to meet.
How to evaluate a green claim
- Ask which standard or certification the claim refers to — and request the certificate.
- Break the product down: which layers are bio-based, which are biodegradable, which are neither?
- Compare performance — absorbency and retention must still meet your market's expectations.
- Check the packaging too — recycled cartons and films complete the story.
What a responsible eco line looks like
Bamboo viscose topsheet, a bio-based or biodegradable film, reduced or recycled packaging, and — where possible — a core strategy that reduces environmental impact without lying about it. That combination is achievable today and it is where we focus our eco series.
